Add a Commenti had to read it because my book club chose it. We pretty well all thought it was a mistake. Most refused to finish it. "Girly fluff" plot, and poorly written to boot. The author should contract with Harlequin Romances
Thought this would be a great book. Was a little disappointed as just couldn't get into it.And I DID try.
This book is beautifully written set in two different time periods, weaving together the paths of two women of the same name with similar destiny's. The plot takes you on a journey and everytime you think you have it figured it out, it surprises you. I did find the first 100 pages difficult to get through, but once through it I couldn't put it down. It is filled with mystery, suspense, romance, historical material and is set the beautiful Tuscan village of Siena, and that alone makes it worth the read.
Juliet by Anne Fortier is a story set in 2 times: the present day and 1340 Siena. Ms. Fortier gives us the original story of Romeo and Juliet as it might have been in Sienna, before Shakespeare reinvented it. She connects this story to their modern descendants in the form of Giuletta Tolomei and Romeo Salimbeni, who learn that only they can break the curse on their families (“A plague on both your families!”). The factual parts are interesting. However, much of the action is shallow and predictable. The ending was a jumble of more and more improbable events and unbelievable emotions, as if even the author could not wait to finish the book. Shakespeare may have gotten some of his facts wrong, but he got his characters right: he made us care about Romeo and Juliet, their families and friends. Unfortunately. Ms. Fortier does not. And that, to paraphrase Hamlet, is the rub.
I really enjoyed it. There was a time that I was struggling to get through it and really had to concentrate to be able to go back and forth, despite the fact that there was dates for the ones that when back. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and once I got into the story, I really couldn't put the book down and didn't want it to end. If you enjoy Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, you will find this book very fascinating, especially since you find out that the play is based on a Italian tale.....
i just love this book.I read it twice already.
The Modern Day Juliet is a character severely lacking, but I forgive Fortier for it since the Medieval Juliet of 1340 Siena is absolutely wonderful! Beautifully written.
I stayed up late last night so I could finish this book! Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, the author turned a corner on me. This was an interesting mystery, and loved the historical information on Romeo and Juliet. There was a romance in this book, but it was not the driving force of the story. Thankfully, love scenes were merely alluded to and not out and out described.
This book was absolute genius! It had a little bit of everything thrown into the mix. Action, Humor, romance. You'll be hooked onto this two-in-one story. A modern romance connected to a newtake on the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet.
Fun, historical fiction - great summer read!
