Add a CommentI found the concept to be a bit of a stretch at the beginning and yet the writing draws you into the story. I was captivated.
Once I started this book, I devoured it. Very well writen and the story moves along quite quickly.
I was quickly drawn into the trying life of Christopher Knox, a one-time successful author, columnist, and father. Christopher is struggling with work obligations, and separated from his wife Jacqui. He decides to give his son David a fantasy novel for his eleventh birthday. With David being a reluctant reader, Christopher makes a habit of reading part of the book to his son every night. David looks forward to their nighttime ritual and is quite enjoying the story. Then he begins to suffer from mysterious seizures and has to be hospitalized when he slips into a coma. Devastated, Christopher is determined to continue to read to David every night until he realizes that there is a connection between the novel and his son’s seizures. It would seem that David has become trapped in the story. Christopher’s family must work together to uncover the secrets of the novel and defeat their enemies if they are to regain their life and survive the Bedtime Story. They must save David before the story ends. Definitely a late night page turner for fantasy readers.
This is a book that fluctuates between reality and fantasy. A young boy has a siezure while reading a mysterious book and gets pulled into the fantasy story of the book, leaving his body in a catatonic state. His father begins to unravel the mystery of the book and spends most of the story trying to figure out how to save his son. Meanwhile, his son is on a quest within the storyline of the book in an attempt to save himself. The book was a bit slow in some sections but picked up as it went along. I enjoy reading fantasy but did not enjoy moving back and forth constantly between reality and fantasy.
little bit slow at the beginning but then the story grabs you. very hard to put down.
I really liked this book, the topic is so different from anything else that I have read. I found that I couldn't put it down once I started. Plus, I love to see such a talented writer coming from the Island!
Chris Know is working on his second book, which is taking far too long. He makes a living as a columnist for the Vancouver Sun. His son David has just turned eleven, and Chris finds a book in a used bookstore to give him for a gift. The author wrote a series of four books that Chris read when he was young and he hopes David has a similar experience. But David gets far more than Chris expected. Like other boys before him, David gets enthralled by the book, reading it every chance he gets. When David slips into convulsions and a coma after reading the book one evening his parents rush him to the hospital. But no one seems to figure out what is wrong with him. That is, until Chris becomes convinced that the novel David was reading is responsible for his condition. As Chris works against the disbelief of others and treachery, David is also struggling. Caught in the fantasy world of the book, David fights to complete a quest. A great book within a book, this story is gripping. I couldn't put it down.
Enjoyed reading this story. The ending became a bit complicated and perhaps could have used more explanations for me, but overall it was an easy read, a good escape, and decent characters.
"One of Canada’s best storytellers returns with his second novel, a supernatural thriller in which a father goes to incredible lengths to save his son." Mark Mesley, National Post
